Meet the soldiers of antiquity…
Every year, Roman legionnaires from all over Europe visit Hjemsted Oldtidspark. This year the Danish Roman Group Cohors II Cimbria will visit the park in week 30 (25-31 July). The Roman groups will be setting up their camp in the park. You will then be able to experience life in a Roman marching camp far from the heart of the Empire. The artillery of antiquity…
The Roman camp has replicas of two Roman war machines. The Roman military used these machines during occupations of fortified towns and other defences. These are so-called torsion machines. Power is provided by the torsion springs of twisted rope. The Romans took this construction principle from the Greeks who are thought to have invented it.
The park has Northern Europe’s largest two-tonne replica catapult – Onager. Machines such as this were built for occupation and large battles. The park shows this heavy machine in action every day.
The park also has the world’s only full-size replica of a Hatra Ballista. This is a spear catapult weighing 1.5 tons which was found by the town of Hatra in ancient Iraq.
