The living Iron Age…

In addition to the museum, Hjemsted Oldtidspark comprises an area of 33 acres of beautiful landscape. Here you will find replicas of the houses built here at Hjemsted Banke during the Iron Age. During the summer holidays the houses are inhabited by Iron Age families who cook, fish and work on different crafts.

The park offers a range of different activities. Go hunting Iron Age-style and see if you can hit your target with a bow and arrow. Borrow a dugout canoe at the fishing house and sail on the lake or rent an Iron Age fishing rod and see if you can catch one of the lake's trout, pike or eels. The smith will show you how to turn red-hot iron into beautiful knives or the solid tools so important to Iron Age people.

Sheep and goats populate the park. On occasion we slaughter one of the animals and prepare it in the way it might have been done in the Iron Age. We have daily demonstrations of the park’s Roman war machines which are the largest replicas of their kind in the world. During the summer, Roman legionnaires drop in to display their war techniques and equipment. Find out more under the Roman Festival dropdown menu.

Enjoy your own picnic in many different spots throughout the park. Tables and benches are available – as are barbecue facilities.
